Tommy Hunter - R - Indians

Joel Sherman of the New York Post reports the Yankees voided a multi-year agreement with reliever Tommy Hunter due to a failed physical.

Sherman said the team and Hunter had agreed on a two-year deal for between $11.5 and $12 million but that the team "backed out because they were uncomfortable with the results of Hunter's physical."

It's noteworthy because the Yankees were the only team to not sign a major league free agent this winter. Hunter instead found a one-year, $2 million deal with the Indians.

Tribe manager Terry Francona indicated Hunter's recovery from core muscle surgery -- surely the cause of the Yankees' hesitation -- will likely require him to start the season on the disabled list.

Well, of course you can look at this Hunter situation half glass full or empty.

The Yankees were ready to offer him 2 years at $12 million. That shows what they think he's worth.

So a low risk 1 year at $2 million has the potential to be a major steal.

Did the Tribe know he was injured?

I certainly am guessing they knew he failed that physical. Because the contract is dirt cheap otherwise.

Remember this same type of thing happened a few years ago when our own Mike Napoli was signing with the Red Sox. Was going to sign a large multi-year deal but then his physical turned up a hip condition.

Ended up signing a smaller deal still - and hit REALLY well that year. Red Sox got a total deal there.

The Indians are monitoring the free agent market, including Juan Uribe, MLB.com's Jordan Bastian reports.

"We're looking at everyone," Indians general manager Mike Chernoff said on Wednesday. "If there's a player out there who we think can help us, we're looking at him."

The team enters camp with Giovanny Urshela as its starting third baseman, so a veteran addition like Uribe or David Freese could make some sense. Uribe will turn 37 in March and hasn't received much in the way of interest on the open market.

Heck, even David Murphy is still out there, and Ryan Raburn. The good news is when your position players at those positions are so poor, there's going to be a LOT of cheap help that can be had.



You can't tell me that Murphy and Raburn wouldn't be an upgrade over what we have. And David Freese. Just depends on how desperate they get for a job I guess.

But they wouldn't trade p̶r̶o̶s̶p̶e̶c̶t̶s̶ suspects for Todd Frazier

hasn't received much in the way of interest on the open market.

I would rather stick with Urshela rather than sign Uribe or Freeze.

If they need a veteran presence to act as a mentor.....let it be Napoli.

That said, I have moved on. So now, I'd like to see Freese on a one year deal.

As Dan O'Dowd says, "there's no such thing as a bad one year deal".

Here's a former World Series MVP, a RH bat who hit 14 homers last year, he can actually hit somewhat. Let Urshela go back to AAA and bring him up if he hits.

You can always put go back to Urshela if he hits in AAA. A one year deal is low risk for Freese.

Back to Frazier, I want to backtrack on what I said.

IF the White Sox wanted Kluber/Salazar/Carrasco in a Frazier deal then I totally understand them not doing a Frazier deal.

I wouldn't do it for a starter, but I read that after the Tribe refused, the Reds wanted prospects, which is all they got from the CWS.
