5613Monday highlights, feature:
Brady Aiken, lhp, Indians. About two years after he was the No. 1 overall pick by the Astros—and didn’t sign—and about a year after he was picked No. 17 by the Indians, Aiken finally made his pro debut. The Tommy John patient pitched two scoreless innings in the Rookie-level Arizona League against the Reds, striking out three and walking one. When healthy, Aiken sits comfortably in the low 90s and can throw strikes to both sides while mixing in a plus curveball.
good days from shortstops:

CLE SS Wakamatsu, Luke SS 3 0 1 0 .412
CLE R Aiken, Brady 2 0 0 0 1 3 0.00

5614Gonzalez has an 8 game hitting streak going, been very hot.
Yandy Diaz has an 8 game hit streak going to, and reached base in 11 straight. Just hit another homer last night.
For the bad news ... Our 6th round pick last year, Jonas Wyatt, has to have Tommy John surgery. Shame, he was doing extremely well. 20 K in 16 IP. Was throwing 95. He's just 17.

5615Clippers Notebook: Mike Clevinger is shutting down Triple-A hitters
Jacob Myers
Righty Michael Clevinger continues to tear it up in Triple-A and has himself near or at the front of the line as far as starters the Indians would consider bringing up if a need arises. That and more in today's Clippers notebook...
The Columbus Clippers dropped to second place in the International League West 1.5 games back of Indianapolis after going 2-4 last week. However, Mike Clevinger continued to dominate on the mound by tossing two scoreless outings. He picked up a no decision in each game.
The former fourth-round pick of the Angels won two games in the Governors’ Cup championship series last season for his first starts with Columbus, and he’s continued to impress manager Chris Tremie, staff and his teammates. His accelerated growth put him in an Indians uniform in less than half a season in triple-A.
Clevinger struggled in three starts in Cleveland resulting in a 8.79 ERA before being shipped back to Columbus.
He’s still 6-0 in triple-A in 2016 with a 2.48 ERA. Three straight shutout performances for Clevinger likely has put him as the next option to be called up if the Indians rotation suffers an injury.
With a fastball in the mid-90s and a plus changeup, Clevinger continues to work on throwing his curveball more efficiently. Clevinger’s undoing in his first MLB stint was the inability to throw a third pitch for a strike. In Triple-A he can overpower hitters. That’s not the case in the MLB.
Clevinger allowed three home runs in the bigs, and he’s only surrendered four long balls this season with the Clippers.
His next start is scheduled for Friday against Norfolk vying for his fourth consecutive scoreless outing. Sharpening his slider and curveball could turn Clevinger into a valuable big league arm.
On the hill
One of the more recent developments in the last couple weeks has been T.J. House making three consecutive appearances out of the bullpen. As a starter for 12 games, House had a 4.82 ERA and was 4-3.
In his three appearances out of the bullpen House has thrown 3.2 innings and allowed two earned runs. The left-handed House threw one inning combined in two outings where he faced no true right-handed hitters. Could this be a new role for House?
Toru Murata was the IL wins champion last season but has resorted to the bullpen this year. Tremie said back in May that Murata’s move to the bullpen was a matter of not having room for him in the starting rotation. It appears House may be in the same boat.
Murata owns a 4-1 record and 3.07 ERA in 17 games.
House is the second left-handed arm in the bullpen with Kyle Crockett who, the latter, lowered his ERA by 55 points this week. In his outings for the week he went 1/3 of an inning on June 16th and allowed one hit, one run/earned run and five of eight pitches for strkes, and then on June 18th went 2/3 of an inning and allowed one hit, no runs and thew 9 of his 12 pitches for strikes.

Third baseman and outfielder Yandy Diaz is currently riding a seven-game hitting streak dating back to June 12. Over that time his average has increased by 16 points. Since June 9, it has improved 27 points hitting .405 over his last 10 games.
He made his first appearance in Columbus on May 12 when Giovanny Urshela went on the disabled list with a hamstring injury. Since that time, Diaz has played in 35 games sitting out just twice.
He has quietly put together a slash line of .288/.361/.432 which ranks in the top two in each category among current everyday players.
Batting primarily in the top of the order, shortstop Erik Gonzalez and Diaz make a potent one-two punch that stifles opposing pitchers.

HIGHLIGHTS
Mike Clevinger (Columbus, SP) - 5.2 IP, 2 H, 0 R/ER, 4 BB, 8 K, 0 HR - In his last three starts, Clevinger hasn’t allowed a run in 18.2 innings. His eight strikeouts and four walks both tied season highs. He eclipsed 100 pitches for the third time this season, but 102 weren’t enough to get him though the sixth inning. Still, he has a 2.48 ERA and opponents are hitting just .200 of off him as he continues to be a good option to join the Indians’ rotation at any point this season.
Logan Ice (Mahoning Valley, C) - 1-2, 1 2B, 2 RBI, 2 BB, 1 K - The 72nd overall selection in the 2016 draft (taken by the Tribe in the Lottery B round) saw his first professional action on Sunday, batting seventh and delivering a two-run double in the fifth inning to give the Scrappers an 8-2 lead.
THE REST
Joe Colon (Columbus, RP) - BS (1), L (0-1), 0.2 IP, 2 H, 2 R/ER, 1 BB - Colon gave up his first runs of the season on Sunday after he had started the season with 8.2 scoreless innings. He gave up two runs in the bottom of the ninth and his ERA went from 0.00 to 1.93.
Erik Gonzalez (Columbus, SS) - 3-5, 1 RBI, 1 K - Since going 0-for-6 on June 11, the shortstop has a seven-game hit streak working for him in which he’s gone 12-for-30 (.400) at the plate. In that span, he has also driven in nine runs.
Yandy Diaz (Columbus, LF) - 2-5, 1 K - Just like Gonzalez, Diaz went hitless on June 11 and is currently working on a seven-game hit streak. Diaz has gone 10-for-25 (.400) in his last seven games to take his batting average from .260 to .288.
Clint Frazier (Akron, LF) - 2-4, 1 K - Frazier’s two hits snapped a brief 0-for-11 slump that the slugger had experienced over his last three games. Impressively, he was still able drive in a run in each of those hitless games.
Jeremy Lucas (Akron, C) - 3-4, 1 R, 1 K - Akron’s catcher put up his second three-hit game of the season and his first since April 12.
Bradley Zimmer (Akron, CF) - 1-3, 1 2B, 1 R, 1 BB, 2 SB - Since June 10, when Zimmer went 0-for-4 with a hat trick, he has an eight-game hitting streak going that has boosted his batting average 20 points from .223 to .243, which is the highest it’s been since June started. Additionally, in his last six games, he has swiped eight bases.
Rob Kaminsky (Akron, SP) - 6.0 IP, 5 H, 1 R/ER, 0 BB, 1 K - Kaminsky’s six innings tied a season high for start length, and the lefty needed just 65 pitches to get through his start. Of those pitches, 48 went for strikes, and the 21-year-old turned in a game score of 69.
Robbie Aviles (Akron, RP) - 3.0 IP, 1 H, 0 R/ER, 1 BB, 2 K - In his last appearance out of the ‘pen, Aviles allowed four runs. But on Sunday he was sharp enough to allow just one hit and pitch the most innings in an appearance he has all year.
Anthony Santander (Lynchburg, DH) - 2-4, 1 2B, 1 R, 2 RBI, 1 BB, 1 K - Santander’s hot weekend at the plate continued on Sunday. Over his past three games, he has collected five hits, two of which were homers, and drove in two runs in each contest for six total.
Sicnarf Loopstok (Lynchburg, C) - 3-5 - The catcher singled three times for his first three-hit game of the season. He now has a hit in four straight games.
Mitch Brown (Lynchburg, SP) - L (2-5), 3.2 IP, 4 H, 6 R/5 ER, 4 BB, 7 K, 1 HR - Brown surrendered a season high in runs and pitched the second shortest start of his season. He was scored on in every inning he pitched until he was knocked out in the fourth inning.
Sean Brady (Lynchburg, RP) - 4.1 IP, 11 H, 6 R/4 ER, 1 BB, 3 K - Brady came out of the bullpen for the first time this season, and the results weren’t good. He pitched a scoreless fifth and sixth innings but the Keys’ bats got to him, like they did Brown.
Mark Mathias (Lynchburg, 2B) - 2-4, 1 HR, 1 R, 4 RBI - The 21-year-old infielder hit his third homer of the season and second in the last week. In the last week, he collected nine hits, eight RBI, six walks and three steals.
Nathan Lukes (Lake County, CF) - 1-3, 1 RBI, 1 K - Not much went well for the Captains’ offense on Sunday. Lukes drove in the team’s only run with his a sacrifice fly in the third inning.
Francisco Mejia (Lake County, C) - 1-4 - Mejia accounted for one of his team’s four hits, and it extended his current hitting streak to 21 games. His .336 batting average leads the team.
Tyler Krieger (Lake County, 2B) - 0-3, 1 BB, 1 K - Mejia has a couple more games to go to match Krieger’s 23-game streak that was broken on June 15. Since Krieger’s streak was broken he has gone hitless in three of his last six games.
Brock Hartson (Lake County, SP) - L (5-3), 6.0 IP, 4 H, 3 R/ER, 1 BB, 6 K - The righty tied a season high with six innings, and put together a quality start. It was the sixth inning that got him into trouble, when he allowed all three runs. Through the first five innings, he allowed just one hit.
Luke Wakamatsu (Mahoning Valley, SS) - 3-5, 2 2B, 2 R, 2 RBI - The 19-year-old is off to a great start in the first three games of the season, batting .429 with three RBI and three runs.
Emmanuel Tapia (Mahoning Valley, 1B) - 3-6, 1 HR, 1 2B, 3 R, 3 RBI, 2 K - In 33 games last season, Tapia had two homers. This year, he already has two dingers in his first three games. He has, however, already struck out six times.
Silento Sayles (Mahoning Valley, LF) - 2-4, 2 R, 1 RBI, 1 BB, 2 K - Sayles started the year with Lake County, but batted just .188 in 18 games. In his first game back at Mahoning Valley, he went 0-for-4, but had a nice game on Sunday.
Juan Hillman (Mahoning Valley, SP) - 6.0 IP, 5 H, 3 R/ER, 0 BB, 5 K - Hillman’s Scrappers debut was a quality start. He was scored on by a fielder’s choice, single, and sacrifice fly.

HIGHLIGHT
Yandy Diaz (LF, Columbus) 1-3, R, HR, RBI, BB. Diaz has been swinging a hot bat for Columbus lately, and nothing changed Monday night. Diaz belted his third home run since being promoted to Columbus during the third inning. With the solo blast, the Cuban slugger extended his current hitting streak to eight games. Diaz has responded well to his promotion to Triple-A, as he was called up from Akron on May 12. Diaz has had nearly identical stats at Triple-A and Double-A this season. In 26 games at Akron, Diaz is hitting .286 with two homers and 14 RBIs, and in 35 games at Columbus he is hitting .288 with three homers and 14 RBIs. It will be something to keep an eye on to see if Diaz can keep up his level of production he has had at the dish lately. In his last 10 games, he is hitting .333 with a pair of taters and five RBIs.
THE REST
Jesus Aguilar (1B, Columbus) 2-4, 2B, K. Aguilar was the only person who recorded a multi-hit night for the Clippers in their 8-2 defeat to the Rochester Red Wings. Aguilar will need some more multi-hit nights to help improve his meager .215 average for the season.
Ronny Rodriguez (2B, Columbus) 1-3, 2B. With his double last night, Rodriguez has now hit safely in five of his last six games. Despite that, Rodriguez is hitting only .220 with no homers and four RBIs in his last 10 games.
Michael Choice (DH, Columbus) 1-3, R, HR, RBI, K. Choice launched his second home run of the season via a solo shot in the second inning. This was Choice’s second game back since being activated off the 7-Day DL on Saturday.
Will Roberts (SP, Columbus) 6 IP, 5 H, 7 ER, 4 BB, 4 K. Roberts was saddled with the loss Monday night, dropping his record to 5-5 for the campaign. Roberts fell victim to the big inning, as he surrendered five runs to Rochester in the first, and the Clippers could never recover from the deficit.
Jeff Johnson (RP, Columbus) 1.2 IP, H, 0 ER, BB. Johnson continues to be effective out of the Clippers bullpen, as his ERA drops to 3.00 flat after his outing yesterday. In his last 10 appearances, Johnson has allowed only one run over 10 innings pitched.
Jodd Carter (LF, Mahoning Valley) 1-3, R, HR, RBI. Carter provided all the offense for the Scrappers Monday night, as his solo blast in the fifth inning was all they could score. Carter is starting his second season at Mahoning Valley.
Luis Jimenez (SP, Mahoning Valley) 3 IP, H, 3 R, 1 ER, 4 BB, 4 K. Jimenez was stuck with the loss in his first start of the season for the Scrappers. He will need to show better command and limit the walks to go further into starts.
Argenis Angulo (RP, Mahoning Valley) 2.1 IP, 0 H, 0 ER, 2 BB, 2 K. Angulo gave the Scrappers valuable innings out of the bullpen after the starter was chased following only three innings. Angulo threw a scoreless inning in his only other appearance this season.
Ping-Hsueh Chen (RP, Mahoning Valley) 1 IP, 2 H, 0 ER. Chen scattered two hits but was able to convert a scoreless inning out of the bullpen. He threw two scoreless innings in his only other appearance last Friday.

5618Jonas Wyatt, has to have Tommy John surgery
He has sounded like another really good arm. Good luck Jonas. 2015 draft has a great degree of depth.

Re: Minor Matters
5619since this year's signees had not yet arrived, Aiken was backed up with one exception by a roster of kids from the Dominican Republic, not one of whom had an OPS of as much as 700 last year. Draftees will not find it hard to displace these kids as soon as they arrive in Goodyear.
Re: Minor Matters
5620Bobby Bradley hit a homer in the Car-Cal all star game tonight. Greg Allen had a walk a hit 2 SB's and 3 runs scored in same game. And Julian Merryweather retired the side in an inning of work, and threw a fastball that was hitting 96.
Merryweather is 24 and at high A. He's been dominating so far, they should think about moving him along.
He has 94-96 fastball, slider that is 83-85, and curveball that is 76-78. I really like the change of speeds between his pitches. Move him up to AA and see what happens.

Re: Minor Matters
5623Yandy is mostly playing LF. Threw a runner out at the plate yesterday. Michael Martinez days may be numbered.
Re: Minor Matters
5624Chang and Sheffield also got into the All Star game. Single for Chang, a scoreless not perfect inning for Sheffield.
Curious about those velocity numbers for Merryweather. Tony has always been a few MPH high in his reports.

Re: Minor Matters
5625Rehabbing LH Kenny Matthews and RH Dace Kime both were thrashed in one-inning roles in Arizona. Both allowed 3 runs in one inning; Kime as usual walked 2. It was Matthews first time out since 2014. But our guys prevailed 16-15 in 10 innings.
Oscar Gonazlez a RF had this line: 6-2-3-5 a homer
Li-Jen Chu a C who must be hurt since he was expected in full season or MahValley was: 5-3-4-1 2 doubles
new draftee Hosea Nelson showed up in time to pinch run at the end of the game
As you'd kind of expect for first games of the Rookie league, there were 17 walks and 10 errors
