Re: General Discussion

2986
Wow, did you know Brian Barton too ? How about Jody Gerut ? How about Alex Ramirez ? Did you know about them too ? Oh, you forgot about them. How about fast forwarding to this year and making reasonable suggestions. Or do you just want to continue to cry ?
Rusty!

It's hard to remember all those selections over the past 15 years or so :P .

I suppose you could add Matt McBride, Alex Escobar, Jacob Cruz, Karim Garcia, Josh Bard, Milton Bradley, Danys Baez, Jhonny Peralta, etc. to your list. Maybe you want to save this post for future reference. I know you're counting. :P

What about Tim Lincecum, Brandon Phillips, Jeremy Guthrie, Chris Sale, Yoenis Cespedes, Josh Hamilton, etc.?!?!?

Or, on the other hand, the stiffs that have passed through these portal like Matt LaPorta, Ramon Vazquez, Casey Kotchman, Trevor Crowe, Shelly Duncan, Travis Buck, Dave Dellucci, Johnny Damon, Jason Michaels, Ryan Garko, Todd Hollandsworth, and my very favorite Jeriome Robertson, etc

As far as crying is concerned, I think I choose to cry..............

over the demise of our farm system during the Shapiro regime since 2001 along with his partners in crime. When I see the decisions these "pros" made, I'm pretty happy with my "suggestions" especially when you know these guys actually get paid for what they do. Paid to fail. :(

The Drafts From 2001 to Present

In my opinion, the first five rounds of the June draft are critical to keeping a farm system vibrant and healthy.

I was going to post the top 20 selections from the drafts from 2001 to present but I thought "what the hell" why not post them all.

I highlighted the first ten round selections but its the first five rounds in each of these drafts that ticked me off. Those first 5 to 10 rounds netted us a near zero home grown talent crop.

2001 was a complete bust

By the way Rusty, I've been making "suggestions" but evidently the front office has chosen to go a different direction.

It's been an exercise in futility for me over the years.

If Billy Beane can do it (2012), a bunch of Ivy Leaguers should be able to do it. Rather, we've suffered three 90+ loss seasons out of the last 4.

Beane took Cespedes from under Shapiro's nose. The Dodgers did the same with Yasiel Puig and the Cubs did the same with Alay Soler.

Now they've decided to increase payroll for over-the-hill players when they could have had much better and younger talent for the same dollars.

I don't think these people have a plan. They are throwing darts at free agents just like they have been doing on the draft boards. No plans! No directions!

Re: General Discussion

2987
Just For Kicks, Or Hell, Just For the Hell of it

2001,

We drafted Dan Denham, Alan Horne, and JD Martin ahead of David Wright

2001,

We drafted Dan Denham, Alan Horne, JD Martin, Mike Conroy, Jake Dittler, Travis Foley, Mick Moran, and Mike Conroy ahead of Ryan Howard.

2001,

The darts missed Dan Haren, Dallas McPherson, and Kevin Youkilis.

2002,

Between Jeremy Guthrie and Matt Whitney, available were Joe Blanton, Matt Cain, and Sergio Santos.

2002,

Selected Matt Whitney and Micah Schilling ahead of Joey Votto, Jon Lester, and Curtis Granderson.

2003,

Drafted Michael Aubrey, Brad Snyder, and Adam Miller in front of Matt Kemp, Jonathan Papelbon, Michel Bourn, Andre Ethier, Ryan Sweeny, and Adam Jones.

2004,

Unlucky at darts, hit Jeremy Sowers missed Homer Bailey, Jered Weaver, Stephen Drew, and Huston Street.

2004,

This was a killer deal.....Selected Justin Hoyman who retired before making it to his second pro year with Hunter Pence and Dustin Pedroia still on the board. Sucks man!

2005,

Our #1 pick this year was Trevor Crowe with Jacoby Ellsbury and Matt Garza still available.

Chose John Drennen when Clay Buchholtz, Jed Lowry, Chase Headley, Kevin Slowey, and Yunel Escobar were ripe for the picken'.

2006,

Other than the first 38 picks before David Huff, this was not a very strong draft from the 40th pick to the end of the draft.

2007,

The only significant game changer in this draft was selecting Beau Mills just one pick in front of Jason Heyward.

2008,

Lonnie Chisenhall was #1 at #29 and Trey Haley at #76. Other than picks #1 to #29, not a great class in 2008.

2009,

We selected Alex White with the 17th pick. Mike Trout and Billy Hamilton were still sitting in the bullpen. Jason Kipnis went in the #68 slot. #1 pick this year was Steven Strasburg, #8 was Mike Leake, and #10 was Drew Storen otherwise another lackluster draft.

2010,

Doesn’t look like a very significant draft on paper. In my opinion, the only game changer this year was when we selected Drew Pomeranz at #5 over Chris Sale at #13. Bryce Harper went #1. Harper was the big name in this draft.

2011,

Francisco Lindor got the call at #8. Not enough information on all the picks in this draft to make a call.

2012,

Likewise. Tyler Naquin at #15 was our first pick.

Haren and Victorino are both gone. Oh my ? Cabrera and Choo should bring back at least 2 corner outfielders, #1 starter, and a first baseman. Really ? You don't trust the guys that traded for Choo and Cabrera to trade them again ? Really ? Time to check yourself into the home before you drown in your own drool !
Are you kidding me ?? Is that some kind of a trick question !?!? :P

Just to set the record straight, It's Cabrera, Choo, and (MASTERSON) should bring back at least 2 corner outfielders, #1 starter, and a first baseman.

So - what you're saying is, if Masty is a #1, and Choo is a corner, then Cabrera = 1 corner and a 1b.

Tricky math. Nice trade if you can get it.

Re: General Discussion

2991
I too am disappointed in the Indians draft and development, however every organization has a list of drafted players that didn't pan out. There are only 750 players in the Major Leagues. A coach told me once that less than 5 % of players in any organization will even sniff the Majors. Tough odds.

The good organizations seem to do a better job of identifying the ones that are not going to make it, quickly, and move on. The Indians seem to stick with players too long hoping things will change.

When I used to go to ST in Florida, they had handouts that listed every player in camp. I saved a few of those and compared the current list with the previous year's list. Big turnover....I would say one third of the preious year's players were gone.

Tough finding players that can play this game at the Major League level.

Bottom line is I'm all for bringing back the monkey that threw darts.

Re: General Discussion

2992
Are there discussion boards for other teams on which is documented similar futility? As bad as this draft record looks or is, would we find something similar for, say, Pittsburgh or San Diego or somewhere? And how much of the problem is sucky development?
The drafting stuff was just an exercise in frustration more than futility.

It just seems uncanny that in each and every year we missed out on some players that would have kept the strings of the mid-90's in tact. In fact, could have kept us as an elite team in the '2000's.

My frustrations run deep in the fact that we wasted all of those #1 through #5 picks in 2001. Four number 1 picks, plus Dittler, Moran, Foley, and Mendoza.

If that were not frustrating enough, we turn around and repeat 2001 all over again. Three #1 picks, Two #2 picks, Two #3 picks, plus Pacheco and Ben Francisco. Only one player with any kind of major league success !?!?!? I'm still bummed we dumped Guthrie for nada. The only successful choice they made in two years and they get rid of him !!! With all the great players out there, it just seems uncanny that we missed on ALL of them.

These were 17 picks from rounds 1 through 5 and we had only ONE successful pick. 10 of those picks in the first two rounds ?!?!?!?

Obviously a bunch of amatuers running these drafts.

In 2003 we had 3 more number 1 picks plus Javier Herrera, Ryan Garko, Ben Harrison, and Juan Valdez !?!?!? None of them panned out.

Ten (10) number 1 picks in three years to go along with five (5) number 2's !!!!!! Two (2) more number 1's in 2005.

VT'er

To answer your question honestly, I don't think there is any team in the history of baseball that can answer to all the futility Shapiro and his Tag Team was responsible for. How could any team "miss" on FIFTEEN (15) #1 and #2 picks in 3 years. First of all, this has to be an unprecedented scenario. This has never happened that I'm aware of.

In 2005, we drafted Tim Lincecum at #42. They couldn't have added some chump change to his asking price. On top of that, Shapiro publicly stated that Lincecum's fundamentals were too "violent". He also stated that he didn't know whether Lincecum would relieve, start, or even be a big league pitcher. So they let him get away. Guess what Mr. Shapiro ??? You could have had another Cy Young winner on your team. Instead:

1 Trevor Crowe
1 John Drennen
2 Stephen Head
3 Nick Weglarz
3 Jensen Lewis
4 Jordan Brown
5 Kevin Dixon
6 Joe Ness
7 James Deters
8 Ryan Edell
9 Roman Pena
10 Jason Schutt

Wonderful!

Well! I'm really done crying any more with the release of this post.

Gotta wonder how Billy Beane would have handled this situation.

I guess Rusty brings out the worst in me

Re: General Discussion

Anyone paying attention to Cleveland Baseball of the day and expecting a Pennant or World Series Championship is just wasting their time until Shapiro and/or Antonetti are gone.

Dolan appears content with the status quo.....which is losing.

Nothing is going to change for Cleveland Indians Fans until the front office has MAJOR shake ups.

Plan accordingly away from Cleveland Indians Baseball to have some fun until hopefully all those losers currently in charge.....are gone.
