The chief said he will closely monitor the Venezuelan during the last month of the campaign.
CLEVELAND. -
For the second consecutive season, the performance of the Indians shortstop, Asdrubal Cabrera, has declined as the season has progressed.
Tribe's manager, Manny Acta, does not believe that it is a tendency of the Venezuelan but thinks the shortstop must confront the issue. "It's something you have to investigate to see what will help, it is posibilemente rest more in the first half, something that sometimes just can not be done, "said the pilot.
"You're playing. You are here to win. Or perhaps the problem lies in his preparation. Whatever it is, I will not say that it is a trend. " Acta gave Cabrera the day off on Monday and put him in the lineup as the designated hitter against the Athletics on Tuesday. The Venezuelan went 4-1 with a double.
The foreman said that Cabrera has been playing with pain in his legs. Still, the similarity between this season and last is undeniable. During his first 69 commitments this year, Cabrera hit .300 with 11 homers and 40 RBIs for the Indians. But from that beginning, in which he was selected to represent American League in the All-Star for the second consecutive year, has logged just three homers and has driven only 13 runs. His season average is .274.
In 2011, Cabrera batted .294 with 16 homers and 55 RBIs in his first 91 commitments. But in the last 60 games, his average was .240 with nine homers and 37 RBIs .
"He's had a pretty respectable season" , Acta said of Cabrera's performance this year. "His numbers will not be like last year and can not do everything himself. To drive in runs and stuff, there must be men on base and the players around you have to contribute."
"I think he has been pretty consistent and (the descent) was not as serious as last year. He also had an incredible first half in 2011. Would be difficult to repeat."
Acta thinks closely monitoring Cabrera's playing time during the last month of the campaign. "insinuating that I'm not going to play him in every game," said Acta "We're going to take a little rest."
