Clippers lefty strikes out five in 7 2/3 innings

08/30/2012 9:33 PM ET

Louisville could not do anything against David Huff as the Clippers left-hander shut down the Bats in a 2-0 Columbus win.

After four innings of scoreless baseball, the Clippers would finally break through in the bottom of the fifth. Cord Phelps drove in Tim Fedroff with an RBI single up the box. Phelps then came around to score on a Jared Goedert RBI single to right, giving Columbus a 2-0 lead.

Meanwhile, Clippers left-hander David Huff (W, 7-6) was flat-out dominant on the mound, shutting out the Bats on seven hits while striking out five and walking one in 7 2/3 innings of work.

The closest Louisville got to scoring was in the eighth inning when they had runners on second and third with two outs in the top of the eighth. Fortunately, Columbus reliever Frank Herrmann got Devin Mesoraco to pop out to second to end the threat. He would later go on to earn his eighth save of the season by shutting the door in the ninth. Chad Reineke (L, 5-11) took the loss for Louisville.

Columbus will continue its three game series with Louisville on Friday night. The Clippers will have left-hander T.J. McFarland (7-6, 5.12) get the start on the mound. Right-hander Tim Gustafson (5-5, 5.13) will get the ball for the Bats. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 pm.

Cooper Rides High in Mudcats Victory, 3-1

By Darren Headrick / Carolina Mudcats

08/30/2012 10:01 PM ET

Zebulon, N.C. -

Jordan Cooper finished his 2012 season a high note as he tossed seven dominant innings in a 3-1 win for the Carolina Mudcats over the Potomac Nationals on Thursday night at Five County Stadium.

Cooper (9-7) won his third straight start by holding the Nationals to one unearned run while scattering four hits. He struck out seven and walked one batter. Over his final three outings of the season, the right-hander surrendered just one unearned run and two walks over 19 innings. He fanned 16 in the process of winning all three decisions.

Grant Sides earned his fifth save, tossing a perfect ninth. Carolina improves to 63-73 while Potomac drops to 61-74. The Wilmington Blue Rocks were also a winner to eliminate the Nationals from the postseason.

Rob Gilliam (1-2) took the loss after allowing three runs over seven innings. Trailing 1-0 in the last of the second, the Mudcats went to work against the right-hander. Todd Hankins doubled to lead off, and scored on a base hit by LeVon Washington. The speedy center fielder would later score on a double by Justin Toole, giving Carolina a 2-1 lead.

That one-run advantage would be all Cooper needed, but shortstop Tony Wolters provided insurance by scorching a line drive over the right field wall for a 3-1 edge. The shot was Wolters' eighth of the year and second in as many games.

The Carolina Mudcats finish their series with the Potomac Nationals on Friday, August 30, at 7:15 p.m. It is the final home game of the regular season for the Mudcats. Tickets are available by calling (919) 269-2287 or visiting carolinamudcats.com.

Players poll: Greensboro No. 5 minor-league destination

FRIDAY, AUGUST 31, 2012 (Updated 3:29 pm)

By JEFF MILLS
Staff Writer

GREENSBORO -- The city's downtown ballpark has been a hit with fans since opening in 2005.

And NewBridge Bank Park is a hit with visiting teams' players, too.

A survey of 382 minor-league baseball players conducted by milb.com ranked Greensboro at No. 5 as the answer to this open-ended question:

"What's your favorite minor league town or city to visit on a road trip?"

Dayton, Ohio, topped the list with 31 votes (9 percent). The Dayton Dragons -- a Class-A affliliate of the Cincinnati Reds -- have a popular downtown ballpark, and they have drawn sell-out crowds at Fifth Third Field for 13 consecutive seasons.

Dayton is the sixth largest city in the state of Ohio, it has a large Reds fanbase, and it was listed in 2011 by Bloomberg Businessweek as among the 30 best cities for college graduates to find a job.

Rounding out the top five in the minor-league players poll:

Charleston, S.C. (26 votes, 8 percent); Fort Wayne, Ind. (23 votes, 7 percent); Myrtle Beach, S.C. (23 votes, 7 percent); and Greensboro (19 votes, 6 percent).

Of North Carolina's nine affiliated minor-league franchises, only Greensboro received more than four votes. Other in-state cities receiving votes were Durham, Winston-Salem, Asheville, Burlington and Kannapolis.

Charlotte, Hickory and Zebulon received no votes.

Greensboro finished ahead of notable minor-league towns including Las Vegas, New Orleans, Nashville, Memphis, Tampa, Salt Lake City, Chattanooga and Louisville.

Lakewood, N.J. -- which leads the South Atlantic League in attendance -- got seven votes (2 percent).

Good work Joe! You did a lot more cutting and pasting than I have been taking the time for. I followed the scores on Minor League Baseball.com on my I-Phone while we toured through Scotland. 5 hour time difference means the scores start coming in during the middle of the night.

Most impressed to see Paulino promoted to Mahoning Valley and continue to hit. He homered last night. I want to know what position the Indians want to develop him at. He also made a couple errors yesterday and he's had nearly 20 total in short season play but he's an outstanding hitter. He and Martinez both made AZL all-star team. Remember this kid is only 17.

Our best prospects all play the same positions: Lindor best defender stays at SS. Ronny Rodriguez about 18 homers and voted best defensive SS in Carolina League, only age 20. Juan Diaz is marginal minor leaguer and hitting well in AAA. Rodriguez or Paulino could move over to 2nd or 3rd. But at 3rd Giovanny Urshela (my fave of 2011 who had a poor year in Lake Count) has always been rated outstanding defensively and is finishing 2012 with a torrid bat; 15th homer last year and hitting 281. Second half stats have been excellent. And Jorge Matinez has had a great bat. And lots of good very young 2nd basemen too with Jose Ramirez around 350 at Lake County and Wolters a solid performer in Carolina. Everyone of those guys (outside of Diaz) is age 17-20. Some of them should be moved to OF where our strength is incredibly thin.

Maybe Levon Washington will bounce back, at least he's healthy now. Luigi Rodriguez is an exciting 19 year old CF and I like Anthony Santander raw 17 year old. Older lesser prospects are Jordan Smith and Bryson Myles who have played well in Midwest League at age 22.

Minor League seasons coming to an end. Arizona league was done a couple weeks ago. Columbus wins 3-2. Tim Fedroff's 3 hits give him an OPS of 910 in AAA. Adds 3 steals. Hoping for some time with the Tribe. 2 hits apiece also by Goedart, Diaz and Luke Carlin. David Huff win an innings in relief. Cole Cook with his first AAA start pitches 5 shutout innings to end a remarkable 2012: pitched at 4 levels and did better with each promotion: lake County 3.46, Carolina 2.74, Akron 2.00, Columbus 0.00 in 12 innings.

Aeros low on prospects but are heading to the playoffs. 6-0 winners on Labor Day. Jesus Aguillar finished well, hit his 3rd AA homer, ends with Akron at 292 and OPS of 902 going 11-23 to finish up. Holt and Henry each 2 hits. Neither is going anywhere in his career. Hector Rondon with 2 more innings, 1 by power reliever Jose Flores, 2 by uninspring RH Brett Brach.
