Browns clinch No. 1 pick in 2018 NFL draft

The Cleveland Browns are about to be on the clock — again.

With a 20-3 loss against the Chicago Bears on Sunday, the Browns clinched the No. 1 overall pick in the 2018 NFL draft while moving to 0-15 on the season. A loss next week against the Pittsburgh Steelers would make the Browns just the second team after the 2008 Detroit Lions to go 0-16.

If Cleveland retains the pick, it would become the first team to make consecutive No. 1 overall selections since the Browns picked Tim Couch and Courtney Brown in the top slot in 1999 and 2000. Defensive end Myles Garrett was the first selection of the 2017 NFL draft.

The Browns also own the Houston Texans' first-round pick after the team moved back from the No. 12 spot last year. The Texans selected quarterback Deshaun Watson with the pick.

The team also holds second-round picks from the Texans (in exchange for taking on Brock Osweiler's salary) and Philadelphia Eagles (as part of the team's trade up to No. 2 overall to select Carson Wentz).

The pick will be the first in Cleveland for general manager John Dorsey, who took over for the fired Sashi Brown.

[ Haven't followed the Browns in years.... they have anyone in the organization able to judge talent for a change. ??? ]

WoW! Just received two notices in the mail , one from state farm and one from new england concerning my life insurance policies. I'm outliving the life of the policies. Just got off the phone with both companies. new england went from $80.00/mo to $190.81/mo. state farm went from $190.00/mo to $518.00/mo. Sucks to get old I guess. Glad I still have a full time job. Maybe I'll start watching the Indians again. Maybe the stress will lead to my demise :P :P

It really hurts when you know you've been funding these policies for 40+ years. Seniors should have some type of a firewall to prevent or limit the bleeding. I was under the impression that these policies provided some support for families after death.

I just came across this neat Twitter account that tweets old baseball photographs. This colorized one of Lou Gehrig against our Indians looks awesome.

Cleveland Municipal Stadium, July 8, 1935 - Breathtaking view of fans either coming or going from the 1935 All-Star Game. AL beat NL 4-1 as Jimmie Foxx of the Philadelphia Athletics was the big star with a 2-run home run off Bill Walker of St Louis Cardinals. Attendance: 69,812

Cleveland, Ohio, 11/22/30 - Construction for Cleveland Municipal Stadium is at the beginning stages. The building in distance is 52-story Terminal Tower that opened about 4 months before photo was taken. Stadium would open July 1931 but Indians didn't play in it until July 1932

I found some of these anecdotes very interesting. Maybe some of you will too. --

In honor of the NBA Finals, please share your favorite stories about baseball players playing basketball, or any connection between the two sports.

The late Mike Flanagan was a great shooter. At the 1987 All-Star break, he shot free throws with his nephew, and made 103 in a row. I wrote it in the paper. The next day, he told me, “just to clarify, I didn’t miss the 104th shot. My nephew got tired. So we quit.”

Astros reliever Joe Smith, who can really shoot a basketball, won a game of HORSE (or PIG) two years ago when one of the five guys in the game was Steph Curry. “I made a shot with my back to the basket,” Smith said. “I made a three left-handed.” Steph missed both.

Joe Mauer was All-State in basketball his senior year in high school. He told me he was a defensive specialist only. I asked three times how many points a game he averaged. Finally, he said, “22.” Torii Hunter: “I’ve seen him shoot. He looks like an NBA player.”

Former pitcher Steve Woodard is ambidextrous. In pickup games, he has occasionally altered shots, shooting one right-handed, the next left-handed.

Former big league infielder Eliot Johnson had a 44-inch vertical jump in high school, and executed some spectacular dunks. Jacoby Ellsbury, as legend has it, once took off from just inside the free throw line, and dunked.

Three families have produced a father-son, basketball-baseball combo. Pat Riley’s dad played briefly in the big leagues, Darryl Strawberry’s son played briefly in the NBA and Barry Larkin’s son still plays in the NBA.

Cal Ripken Jr. was a great basketball player. So strong, especially around the hoop. He once played against massive Dave Parker in a pickup game. Parker told Ripken, “I’ve never been pushed around by a shortstop before.” Cecil Fielder could dunk. David Wells could dunk.

2018 not a good year for storms hitting North Carolina.

Got whacked with rain from hurricane Florence.

Getting whacked today with big snowstorm.

And, of course, the giant shit storm from the voter fraud in a congressional race.
