Zinino gone, Bo on Saturday

June 16: C Mike Zunino designated for assignment; C Bo Naylor getting called up; RHP Cody Morris optioned to Triple-A Columbus; INF/OF Richie Palacios traded to Cardinals

June 16: RHP Triston McKenzie (right elbow discomfort) scratched from start; RHP Touki Toussaint's contract selected

McKenzie was scratched from Friday’s start with right elbow discomfort. He planned to get an MRI during the game. The Guardians will hold off putting McKenzie on the IL and will have more information on Saturday. McKenzie started the season on the IL with a right teres major strain. He made his 2023 debut on June 4.

Toussaint spent the beginning of the season with Triple-A Columbus. He went 2-1 with a 4.06 ERA over 20 games played with one start. He started in place of McKenzie, making his debut with the Guardians.

I assume that Morris will be back immediately if McK goes on the IL Again. if a th starter is needed I suppose Gaddis comes back up unless they're ready for Gavin Williams

Zunino joins a collection of end of their career signings that didn't quite work out. Brady Anderson and Jack Morris quickly come to mind. Hardly alone.

McKenzie is back on the IL.

Latest addition to the bullpen for some reason is Daniel Norris with an ERA well up over 6 for Columbus. I'm sure he'll be gone in a day or two and Morris returns.

He's been a little inconsistent in Columbus, but unlike catchers they don't hesitate to promote talented pitchers.

Gavin's last start was on the 14th; he would be a couple days past his next turn if he starts for the Gs on Wednesday
Gaddis last pitched on the 15th so he too would be on normal rest plus one day on Wednesday
Norris has not pitched since the 10th but I can't imagine they would start him with his 6.93 ERA and 1.91 WHIP. 15 earned run in his last 13 2/3 innings

5 games under .500 and only 2.5 gb. Gotta wake up soon.

2 1/2+ months and we can't make up a 2 1/2 game deficit.

We should be running ahead of the pack instead of playing catch up. No excuses. We are under performing. We still have a team with the most talent in this division... just not showing it.

From the looks of it, we will have to play .750 baseball against the teams in this division.

Injured starting pitching is a partial excuse; McKenzie's absence is significant setup and not really replaceable.
Quantrill was a reliable back of the rotation guy; maybe injury was excuse for underperformance and maybe he'll return at prior production level?
Hard to expect Clase to be as good as last year.
Rosario's defense is a major step backward. That is unlikely to change until he's supplanted at SS.
Catching has a chance to upgrade; we'll see, game one for Bo was no different than a Zunino effort

Ramirez and Naylor Sr. and apparently Brennan are solid hitters. Giminez seems to coming around.
Kwan will never be a slugger but needs to at least get back to last year's power.
It would be nice if Straw hit a homer just to prove it's possible.
Bell appears to be hitting better but way short of home run expectation.
The anticipated power surge behind the plate is not likely to occur with Bo in his rookie year, although he did hit a dozen in Columbus.

Daniel Norris departs with a 0.00 ERA. I'm afraid I'm going to have trouble remembering that he was once a Guardian. There were a couple guys who dropped by as relievers for a few weeks last year or the year before who are are much harder to recall than Jack Spring or Ray Schaffernoth back in the 60s; or Brian Oelkers and Rich Yett from the 70s or was it the 80s?

Some have whispered that Espino and McKenzie were both deemed more injury prone than accurate because the organization slow-played their rehab to focus in the pitch lab. Williams will challenge any efforts to control his timeline
