Karinchak (back) is likely to start the season on the injured list, Zack Meisel of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Karinchak was reportedly dealing with arm stiffness to begin spring training, though the injury has since been clarified as an upper back muscle strain. Regardless, he has now been shut down from throwing for an additional 7-to-10 days. Karinchak's status should only further cement Emmanuel Clase's role as Cleveland's closer.

12834Joc Pederson, Dallas Keuchel call out Cleveland Guardians for having low payroll
More so than in past years it seems, players around baseball are publicly voicing their opinions about the sorry state of some teams’ payrolls – including that of the Cleveland Guardians.
This week alone, White Sox pitcher Dallas Keuchel and newly signed Giants outfielder Joc Pederson have voiced their opinions on the low payrolls in baseball, singling out the Guardians as an example.
Keuchel, while complimenting Cleveland’s ability to stay competitive within the AL Central, expressed a desire for the team to ultimately spend more money. Though he plays for a division rival, his quote doesn’t come off as trying to antagonize the team or anything – he’s simply making a good point.
Depending on who you believe, the Guardians may have been interested in signing Pederson this offseason. He ultimately signed a one-year, $6 million deal with San Francisco, which makes one wonder if Cleveland really did look to bring him in, because that is about as affordable as a player like Pederson can get on the open market.
And with the way he’s calling out these low-spending teams, there’s a good chance the Guardians were never really in the running to sign him. Either that or he just really doesn’t like Cleveland.
All that being said, it’s refreshing to see players offering their thoughts on payrolls like this. This lockout showed that baseball players connect with fans better than ever, and they deserve to hold more power not just in public perception, but in the actual inner workings of the game itself. Though it’s doubtful the Dolans care all that much in this case, it’s still a pretty embarrassing thing to be called out like this twice in the same week as the team continues to sit on its hands.
And with these types of opinions now becoming more public-facing, one wonders if this makes it that much harder for a team like the Guardians to sign a free agent. If the perception is that your team simply won’t do enough to put a winning team on the field, who will ever want to play here?
If there were ever a time for the Guardians to try and change that perception, this would be it, but don’t hold your breath. Not for now, at least.

12836roster is down to 33: Jones, Freeman and Noel reassigned, since all have minor injuries and aren't playing anyway
Then Valera, Tena, Rocchio and Palacios.
Also a few invitees were sent back to the minor league camp: C B Naylor and LHP McCarthy

Re: General Discussion
12837In my roster planning, Chang is the 2nd baseman; Giminez or Arias could handle SS, but I suppose Giminez gets the first shot at it. I'm eager to see Rosario in LF so the OF could be Amed, Straw and Kwan with Naylor playing as often as possible but sooner or later moving to 1B where I doubt Bradley will succeed. I'd like to see Owen Miller getting lots of time at 1st base. Mercado would be a spare OF I suppose. Pirates wanted Ben Gamel last spring, perhaps Brad Zimmer could be their cleanup hitter this year
Re: General Discussion
12838Good calls civ - and I also hope Arias finds his way to SS or to 2B.
I know things change but Arias is so professional in his at bats. I think the team would be well served to use contact type guys and speed since they have so little power.

Re: General Discussion
12839I like Arias a lot too. I'd be fine with him at SS but Giminez probably deserves the first crack at it? I'm not sure.
I remember young guys breaking in as part-timers at several positions [my ancient mine takes me back to Carlos Baerga and Bobby Grich] before taking over as an everyday starter. If it were up to me, Miller would be the starter at 1st base, backed up by Chang; Chang would be the starter at 2nd backed up by Arias; Giminez would be regular SS backed up by Arias; on the rare days Ramirez doesn't start at 3rd, Arias plays there. That leaves Ernie Clement for further bench help. And of course I have just left Rosario no playing time in the infield.

12840Love it!
,
As an aside Owen Miller, on the broadcast, talked a ton about playing 1B. Just sayin'
If a kid like Clement can hit somewhat....well...he is a stud fielder. Perfect utility guy as well.
The reality is that when you are using names like Chang, Owen Miller, Clement, Giminez Kwan in a division that has totally loaded up - even Detroit and KC added on significantly, this is a season where (for various other reasons including the Rule V fluke event) we sort through infield options etc. and as usual rely on pitching.
I am not opposed to the idea that guys like Arias and those other listed guys could really impress and we make an improbable run. Starting pitching speaks volumes.
