A friend asked if Cleveland has ever had a worse hitting team. I assumed yes, around 1968 in the Year of the Pitcher. Looked it up.
The runs per game this year is the 2nd lowest in 25 years. 2010 was worse. A few lower years in the late 60s early 70s.

But in batting average this is the worst ever; prior lowest were 234 a couple times; this team is at 227.

OPS of 682 is the lowest since 1991 team which went 57-105.

Am certainly not to going to take the trouble to look for cruddier outfield tandems. Yesterday the corps had a typical 1-10 night. Friday 1-8. Thursday 2-14. Wednesday 2-9. Tuesday a mindblowing 8-11.

I think Santana's lack of hitting, though he still walks, and his somewhat sloppy fielding is due to Francona's absence. Dont forget Carlos loves the guy and kisses his bald head before the start of a game.

Nobody hotter right now than Jose Ramirez. Let's hope he doesn't pull his usual playoff fade.

Something called a "player pool" of a dozen guys can be carried as backups for the playoffs to be added between rounds .

civ - I'd say "not Plutko" because Quantrill has oodles more upside than Plutko. I would wager Quantrill will be stretched out next spring training and definitely be in the running for that 5th spot in the rotation.

Remember the rebirth of Yler Naquin. He had a stretch of 15 games in which he hit

49 8 16 14 4 homers 2 walks [he never walks] 13 strikeouts [ok so not perfect but plenty of hits and long balls 325/353/695 OPS 1048

Then over the most recent 15 games its been the redeath of Tyler Naquin

47 3 8 3 0 homers 2 walks 14 strikeouts 170/200/213 OPS 413

he's now 29 years old. He has entered the peak period of productivity. He has proven he's not a long range keeper.

Zimmer and Johnson get the next shot, unless they startle everyone and deal for a stud.

Naquin is a very nice 4th outfielder. Filling in because they don't have a real 3 outfielders.

I certainly think outfield will be an area they address this winter - likely with the Lindor trade.

He is outhitting Lindor although it's not Lindor's finest this season. I guess it might make it a bit easier to kiss him good bye since he has NOT been a big contributor by any means.

I'm never happy with a guy who never draws walks; Naquin has not developed any selectivity and therefore no improvement as a hitter. He can be a 4th outfielder for someone else. I'll give his spot to Johnson.

Mike Clevinger was removed from Wednesday's start against the Angels with an apparent injury.
Clevinger looked fine in a 1-2-3 first inning but then didn't come out for the second. He had to be scratched from his last start because of biceps tightness, so it's reasonable to assume that's the cause for his early exit. The Padres should have something official on him soon.

Make no mistake about it, Clevinger's injury profile did play a part in that deal.

Kevin Acee of the San Diego Union-Tribune reports that the Padres "fear they have lost" Mike Clevinger (arm) for the postseason.
Clevinger had to exit Wednesday's start versus the Angels after just one inning. While the team has yet to offer any details, Acee hears that the "primary preliminary suspicions" are that the right-hander is dealing with a muscle strain or tendinitis in his pitching arm.

An MRI has been scheduled, and obviously more will be known once those results are in. Clevinger had to be scratched from his last scheduled start due to biceps tightness.

Our haul for Clevinger looks pretty darn good right now. And that includes Quantrill's promising outing.

Who knows - maybe Bieber and co. are working their magic with him.

We will wind up winning this deal either a little, with Quantrill as perhaps a middle reliever and some of the other 5 with some modest contribution; or perhaps in a big way with Quantrill, Naylor and Arias all having pretty high ceilings and the other 3 possibly useful.

The Bauer deal makes sense in any case I guess since Trevor, despite bouncing back in 2020 and probably matching Bieber with the NL Cy Young, is a guaranteed free agent after the season. If Scott Moss develops or if Logan Allen can figure out how to throw strikes we might get a solid LH starter. Reyes looked great for a month
