Lions defeat the Giants at Roberto Clemente

by The Editorial Staff

December 22, 2024

The Carolina Giants suffered their third consecutive defeat after being defeated by the Ponce Lions at the Roberto Clemente Walker Stadium.

Ponce now has a game and a half advantage over Carolina in fourth place in the standings, putting their record at 14-15. The Giants are in fifth place in the tournament with their record of 13-17.

Just like in his last home game, Giants leadoff hitter Bryan Torres walked and was guided home on a Johnathan Rodriguez double, this time to right field, to make it 1-0 in the first inning.

The Lions got off to a good start in the third inning after Zander Wiel and Osvaldo “Ozzie” Martinez singled to left field. Giants starter Christian Allegretti got imports Connor Owings and Lazaro Armenteros to fly out to get the first two outs of the inning. Edwin Diaz then hit a single to center field that allowed Wiel to score the run that tied the game, 1-1.

A single by Andrew Velazquez produced one more run for the Lions on the legs of Josh Altmann, who had reached first on a walk, for the 2-1 lead in the fourth inning.

On a perfect night for Martinez, the Carolina native hit a double to left field - this time off Giants reliever Rafael Kelly - to give the Lions a 3-1 lead in the sixth inning.

Later in the next inning, with two walks, Roberto "Bebo" Perez hit a perfect bunt to drive in one more run for a 4-1 lead.

Carolina's second run scored on singled to center field, then 2 stolen bases and a sacrifice fly by Deniel Ortiz narrowed the lead 4-2.

A wild pitch by Giants right-hander Saul Gonzalez gave the Lions back their three-run lead at 5-2 in the eighth inning. A double by Jan Hernandez produced an additional run for Carolina to make it 5-3 in the ninth inning.

Veteran right-hander Freddie Cabrera (2-1) earned the win after allowing one run in three innings, striking out three and walking one. Left-hander Christian Allegretti (0-1) took the loss after allowing two runs in four and two-thirds innings. Allegretti struck out five batters and walked two. Alexis Rivero earned his 10th save.

[ Johnathan Rodriguez was 2-5 with a double, a run scored, 1 rbi and 3 strikouts. Rodriguez has been hitting 2nd in the Gigantes lineup. The Gigantes are in danger of missing the playoffs after going to the finals but failing to win the championship the past two years in a row. ]

Sharks won with conviction and secured the extra game

The sharks swept the series at the Monumental stadium, to stay alive in the current season;

Winner of today's game qualifies for the tournament

For the second consecutive year, the Tiburones de La Guaira put the Leones del Caracas in a difficult situation. The sharks swept the Monumental stadium and defeated the lions 7-4. In this way, they forced the extra game and remain alive in the tournament.

The coastal team took the lead thanks to a fiery Pedro Castellanos who homered for the second consecutive day.

In the second inning, the Sharks did not take their foot off the accelerator and scored two more runs to extend their lead 3-0. Tomás Tellis hit an RBI single to drive in a run, while Franklin Barreto hit a sacrifice fly to complete the two-run rally.

Four more runs came home for the coastal team in the fifth inning, when Pedro Castellanos responded again with the bat to bring in a run with a single, while Daniel Montano failed with a force out, but brought another run to the plate and Luis Matos completed the attack with a two-run producing single.

The capital team scored in the fifth inning, thanks to an RBI single by Yonathan Daza. With that hit, Daza sent Francisco Arcia to the plate.

In the bottom of the ninth, the Lions tried to rally in order to complete the comeback against the sharks. With two men on base, Harold Castro unleashed his offensive power pick up his 15th home run of the season.

In the pitching department, the imported Tyler Alexander, dominated the Lions lineupl, by pitching five innings, in which he allowed four hits, one unearned run, gave up two walks and struck out four rivals, to claim the important victory.

[ Gabe Arias paying first base. No errors. heading into the 9th. Gabe continues to struggle this week. After yesterdays game, an 0 fer 3 game dropped his average below .300 for the first time this winter season at .299. The skid continues tonight 0-4 with a walk and a run scored. Gabriel Arias adds RF and 1B to his offeason positions

GUARDIANS ORGANIZATIONAL PLAYERS

Gabriel Arias (1B-RF, La Guaira): combined 4-for-20, 4 R, 1 2B, 2 RBI, 3 BB, 5 K - Arias’ winter campaign may be over after his best outing of the week (2-for-5 with an RBI) was not enough to propel the Tiburones to victory in yesterday’s one-game playoff for the final spot in the LVBP postseason. While La Guaira is done for the 2024-25 season, Gabriel might not be. For those new to winter ball, teams that advance in Caribbean postseasons are allowed to draft refuerzos (reinforcements) off of the eliminated sides’ rosters. On the defensive positioning front, Arias played the remainder of the week at first base after moving there from right field during Tuesday’s contest. Finally, on an interesting note, Gabriel’s five strikeouts were evenly distributed, with exactly one coming in each game.

Victor Izturis (backup C, Lara): 0-2, 1 K, 1 PB - Izturis, who spent the summer of 2024 on the ACL Guardians roster, made his LVBP career debut as a backup catcher for the regular season champion Cardenales in their regular season finale.

Dayan Frias (SS, Monteria): combined 5-for-12, 3 R, 2 RBI, 4 BB, 3 K, 1 SB, 1 E - Frias returned to action on Friday with a pair of RBI, which was enough to restore him to his usual leadoff spot for a two-walk Saturday. It was yesterday, however (ironically, in the Vaqueros’ lone loss of the weekend), when Frias fully got back in his hitting groove, going 4-for-4 with a stolen base.

Johnathan Rodriguez (LF-RF-DH, Carolina): combined 6-for-24, 1 R, 4 2B, 3 RBI, 6 K, 2 SB - Rodriguez’s .250 batting average and six strikeouts last week are a bit deceptive as he entered yesterday 6-for-17 (.353) for the week with only three punchouts and two of his three stolen bases of the season. Then he went 0-for-7 with 3 Ks across the 14 innings of Sunday’s doubleheader, the nightcap of which was his lone DH appearance of a week that saw him get a lot of time in both corner outfield positions.
