Vandals damage Canal Park windows, cause $10,000 in damage

Beacon Journal staff report

Published: August 19, 2014 - 03:04 PM | Updated: August 19, 2014 - 03:04 PM

Eight windows along the restaurant wing of Canal Park in downtown Akron were shattered early Sunday morning, causing as much as $10,000 in damage, police say.

The broken glass windows were first discovered about 12:30 a.m. Sunday by witnesses who reported glass along the area outside The Game restaurant at 300 South Main Street. The restaurant is run by the Akron RubberDucks, but the city of Akron owns the ballpark and pays for most of the maintenance costs.

Akron city work crews counted eight windows measuring 5-feet by 7-feet damaged or shattered. There are no reports of injuries.

Police are unsure what type of projectile was used to cause the damage. They don’t believe the broken windows were caused by gunfire because the both sides of the double-paned glass were not damaged.

Police say the cost to replace the windows with be at least $8,500 or as high as $10,000. Plywood has been used to cover the missing windows.

Dominican season comes to an end this weekend. Gabriel Mejia snagged three more steals yesterday following three singles. That makes his season total 72. Which is pretty impressive and the most of any player at any level in professional baseball. But add in the fact that his team plays a short season, 69 games completed, and it enters Billy Hamilton territory.

Honorable Mention on BA's Prospect Hot Sheet goes to:

Justus Sheffield, lhp, Indians. The Tennessee prep star and 2014 first-rounder has come out of the bullpen in his past three outings after three short starts to begin his pro career. Pitching in the Rookie-level Arizona League, Sheffield on Aug. 16 struck out 10 and gave up only a hit and walk to the Padres. The lefthander can run his fastball up to 93 mph and at age 18 has a mature feel for pitching and four-pitch package.
